Nice post Greg. I can say that I think it has more to do with black-white dynamics than tribalism.

If it were tribalism alone, then Asians and Latinos would not be doing any better than blacks.

What you said about checking yourself in conversations with black people has something to do with it.

White Americans (I call Historically Included Group members-HIGs) and blacks(HEGs)

have generally different orientations to team work. HIGs tend to be assimilationists (You need to fit in so that you stay out of jail and get a good job) and blacks tend to accommodationists (If you don't accept me the way I am then you are trying to annihilate me). Of course, this is just one aspect of the complex white-black thing, but it gives you an idea about what makes trouble for the two groups.

Asians fair the best from this perspective, better their tend to clever assimilate while maintaining a group identity--but they don't have a history of slavery that is dragging behind them. It is not often I find great thoughts in blogs. This was stimulating. Thanks.
